Three's Company was writen to be performed at my junior recital along with Jenn Giba and Valerie Wharton. I wanted to utilize all of our talents, and since we all had marching bass drum experience, I wrote a piece that incorporated split rhythms. Split rhythms are rhythms played by at least two people that, when put together, form a single rhythmic line. The piece revolves around the number three since there were three of us. It opens in 3/4 time then moves to compound meter in 12/8 where the triplets get the beat. Frequent three-note motives can be heard throughout the piece. The title is also an allusion to the 1970s sitcom which revolved around the lives of two girls and a guy, which I thought was fitting.
